Beginnings

Two rivers start their journeys here, on top of a mountain pass at the base of Slide Mountain in the western Catskills. Our artist team explored this potent high point, the divide between the Catskill and Delaware watersheds. From here the headwaters of Esopus Creek flow northeast, ultimately to create the Ashokan Reservoir. Just a few hundred yards away, the headwaters of the beautiful Neversink River run down the opposite slope toward the south.
